Flights from the East coast take at least fifteen to twenty hours to get to Mumbai and New Delhi, which includes a stopover in Singapore. Qantas, Malaysian Airlines and Singapore Airlines have regular routes to India's main cities.

Air travel is booming in India, and you'll find airports well-distributed throughout the country, putting you near your desired destination. However, you can expect your airport experience to be a bit chaotic. Be ready for queues and occasional delays. You won't go wrong with asking around for directions. Just be forewarned about the touts hovering outside the arrivals section offering taxicab rides and hotel accommodations.

For those with lots of time and guts, it's possible to take a bus all the way to India, starting with a flight going into Bali. This slow-mode journey would take you through Java, Sumatra, Malaysia, Thailand, the Mekong countries, southwestern China and Nepal.

Driving in India can at least be described as interesting. It's best to stay a passenger until you've mastered the local driving style, where rules are made on the spot rather than kept in a manual. Jammed roads are the norm, but experience first the local traffic situation before making your conclusion.

A good way to go around city streets is through a motorized rickshaw, which balances on three wheels but rarely topples over. You'll also find buses, taxis and trains. India has one of the world'd largest railway networks, and there is a subway in Calcutta, an overhead light railway in Delhi, and suburban-urban railways in Chennai and Mumbai. You'll find comfortable berths in airconditioned coaches on many Indian lines; and for overnight routes, sleeper coaches.
